Gerry Alanguilan Is. Freaking. Hilarious.

Man, I'm flipping all over his videos all over Youtube.

Don't know the guy? Well he is a great comic book writer and artist who creates and publishes his own comic books in San Pablo, Laguna, Philippines, owns a graphic novel that is nominated for this year's Eisner's awards (Best Graphic Album Category), and is named at one time - The Greatest Man on the Internet by comedian Ray William Johnson for his 'Hey Baby' short films that features him smiling like a pedophile. For more info about this guy, click here

But before you do that, watch these videos of his which I'm sure would make you smile... or even laugh. Never thought that the pedophile-smile would be cool.

Iba ka sir Gerry! Idol!

Upcoming Podcast All About Pinoy Komiks!

Podcasts are slowly getting in to the mainstream nowadays and I believe I have listened/followed a few - namely Bill Simmons of ESPN's "The BS Report"  for some basketball commentary, and for the local ones, the one hosted by DJ Mo Twister, "Good Times With Mo" where they give advice about sex, love, life problems and what not.

Now Komiks will get a chance to get talked about in an all new, all-Tagalog podcast to be presented by comic book writer/artist Gerry Alanguilan together with two other komikeros. I believe its a nice vehicle to promote local komiks where in the Philippines.

I would definitely download this once it goes online on May 6. Pretty excited to hear what they've got to say, as  Gerry is one of my favorites in the industry together with Leinil Francis Yu and Francis Manapul.

More info on gerry.alanguilan.com

P.S - congrats to Sir Gerry as his graphic novel "Elmer" is nominated for Best Graphic Album in this year's Eisner Awards - which basically the Oscars / Grammys of the comic book industry. Hopefully he bags it!

Darna Lives On With Gerry Alanguilan and Arnold Arre

I was never a fan of Darna. Really. Never ever. I thought that she was corny, and even a rip-off of another Western superheroine and all that.

But all of that changed after seeing a couple of comic book panels that spanned up to 9 pages. Yes. Fucking 9 pages is all it took for me to realize that the 64-year old character created by the great  Mars Ravelo was something that could be revived for the new generation of readers: with an all-original, imaginative storytelling from Gerry Alanguilan (Elmer, Timawa, Superman: Birthright) with the right mix of some clean and fresh art from Arnold Arre (that somehow reminded me some of Alan Moore's books before), Darna suddenly became a cool hero for me. She is fucking awesome!

The sad part is, its just fan fiction and it ends there. Sobrang bitin talaga yung istorya. I don't know if they will continue doing it, but I really hope that the Ravelo Family will see Alanguilan and Arre's gorgeous work and maybe give them permission to continue. Sir Mars would be very proud. And I do believe that Gerry and Arnold can pull it off  and make Darna relevant again if given the chance.

Don't believe me? Check out the preview pictures below, but make sure to check out the whole thing at http://darnalives.blogspot.com/ and show some love for their work and our own Pinoy superheroine.

Gerry Alanguilan's Wasted

Gerry Alanguilan is one of the Philippine's great comic book contributors, having worked on books such as Superman: Birthright with another Filipino artist, Leinil Francis Yu; X-Men and many more. He also created and published his own comic books like Elmer and Timawa under his Komikero Publication. But probably his greatest and most underrated achievement thus far is the creation of one of his early works - Wasted.

Originally published in 1998 by Alamat Comics, Gerry decided to share his marvelous work to everybody by posting it on his online comic site, and how priveleged we all are to have a chance to read such a marvelous work of art and literature. Best part of it is - it is FREE! (Read the whole 8-issue Wasted saga here. )

The story revolves around the mishaps of a musician named Eric who finds himself  a victim of random unjustice: first when his dad died, and then when his long-time girlfriend broke up with him and went to move on with another man. His personal life is crumbling, and is slowly becoming deranged because of such great emotional stress. Now searching for his own kind of twisted justice, Eric goes on a rampage, like a walking time-bomb ready to explode on anybody who unfortunately crosses his path.

Leinil Yu and Gerry Alanguilan on Superman: Birthright

I have been reading comics for a long time now, and i just came by and re-read Mark Waid's Superman: Birthright (2004) - another origin tale for our Man of Steel, meant to the be official origin story, but was replaced by Geoff Johns' Superman: Secret Origin (2009). I won't review these one shot origin tales because you all know how Superman came to be and they get pretty boring sometimes.

Anyway, i didn't notice not until a couple of weeks that the artists behind the wonderful artwork of this comic book are Filipinos! I'm not talking about half-baked ones, but full-blooded pinoys! How could I miss their names at the cover the book!? I had to google their names and I was totally surprised. I thought Pinoy comic book artists didn't try to draw popular characters, especially my favorite.

Leinil Francis Yu served as the main artist and sketcher for the whole book, while Gerry Alanguilan inked the former's work and brought vibrance and life to it, making a spectacular one-shot epic that is considered to be one of the best Superman origin stories of all time.

And be sure to check out their deviantART pages by clicking on their names above or a dose of mouthwatering art. These guys are incredible.

So kudos to all Pinoy comic book artists! Mabuhay kayo!

I'll be leaving you with some panels from Superman: Birthright.

Cover-art (see their names at the right hand corner.
i missed them the first time lol)

 The iconic shirt-rip shot!

Yu and Alanguilan did a great job on reimagining this
iconic helicopter scene from Superman: The Movie (video)

Superman, Lex Luthor and Lois Lane
.

Of course no Superman comic book will be complete
without a panel with Lois and Clark.
